Photodynamic therapy (PDT)

PDT is an FDA approved treatment for pre-cancers called actinic keratoses (AKs).  AKs develop on sun-damaged skin and on the skin of people who frequently use tanning beds.

PDT can also be used to treat acne and discoloration of the skin.  A photosensitizing topical drug called aminolevulinic acid (ALA) is applied to the skin, and then after an hour the skin is exposed to a special light source called the BLU-U.

When the photosensitizing drug is activated by the blue light source, the precancerous cells are destroyed.
